25 things you didn’t know about Stockholm

Fourteen islands, a warship that sank after twenty minutes and the reason Swedes queue so well.

I Ingrid Solberg 3 min read

Stockholm is built on fourteen islands joined by 57 bridges, and about a third of the city is water. A few more facts our tour leaders love to share:

  • The Vasa warship sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, less than a mile from the quay. It was raised, almost intact, in 1961.
  • The Nobel banquet is held every December in the Blue Hall of City Hall — which is not blue.
  • The metro is called the world’s longest art gallery: more than 90 of its 100 stations are decorated.
  • You can swim in the water in the city centre in summer.
  • Fika — coffee and a cinnamon bun — is close to a constitutional right.

The other twenty? You will hear them on the tour.
